summerwood/spring run project

Picture

The Summerwood/ Spring Run Community is located in Bozeman, MT. There are two separate gardening areas that we focused and improved upon. The photos to your left show the initiative the residents took in gardening and the need for garden beds in their complex.  Those were their existing gardening areas. We built several raised redwood beds and planters in each location to give them more elbow room. A big thanks to Daylene at the Summerwood complex for having such perseverance and connecting Sage Gardeners to all these wonderful people at Summerwood/ Spring Run.

We had such a fun time building and filling these beds. There were so many grateful recipients - it was a real pleasure creating something that will be used for many years. The day after the beds were built and despite the chilly and rainy forecast... the gardening began. There were a lot of eager gardeners; who can blame them it was June! It was rewarding to provide the vegetable requests of so many people - they asked and we provided! Support was tremendous; we couldn't have done it without the generosity of:
  • Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation
  • Bozeman Area Community Foundation
  • Bozeman Community Co-op
  • First Security Foundation
  • Montana Rural Health Initiative
  • Several local companies: OYM- Design, Simkins-Hallin Lumber Company, Murdochs Home and Ranch Supply, Cashman Nursery, Owenhouse Ace Hardware, and Kenyon-Noble.
  • Many national businesses showed their support as well: Radius Garden, Cobrahead, Everlast Label Co., Seedsavers, and Bionic Gloves.
  • Thank you to Toby Day and the Master Gardener program at MSU.

Many vegetables, herbs, and fruits were planted that day. Everything from lettuces, beans, and tomatoes, to strawberries, zucchini, and cantaloupe were buried beneath the rich healthy soil. Fingers got dirty, rows were marked, and friendships began. It was a remarkable first few weeks... and its only the beginning. Stay tuned for veggie updates, harvesting, and more photos as the sun shines, the air gets hotter, and the growing begins!
